Gorontalo

The regency of Gorontalo lies in the western part of the Province of North Sulawesi. Here live more than half a million people. The regency covers an area of about 11,000 square kilometers, covering 19 districts. about 98 percent of North Sulawesi's Moslem live in this regency.

Fort Otanaha

Fort Otanaha is former defense bulwark of Gorontalo kings during their fight against the Dutch. The curious fact about this fort is that it was built, at least in part, of a mix containing sand, plaster and maleo bird eggs. Or so it is said.

Fort Orange

Fort Orange is reminder of the Portuguese presence in this area during the 15th century.

Tapak Kaki Ukuran Besar

Pohe

Tapak Kaki Ukuran Besar (Big Foot Print), in the village of Pohe, lying on a fine beach on a beautiful Tomini Bay, is a big stone shaped like a foot. The site, about three kilometers from Gorontalo, attracts many visitors.

Dembe Copula

Dembe Copula is the site that contains the graves of Du Pangola and Haji Abu Bakar, who are regarded holy by the local people. The graves lie inside a little mosque.

Holy Graves of Dunggala

The Holy graves of Dunggala belong to a married couple by the names of Ali and Aminah. The grave of Aminah is known as the Grave of Seven-Tiered Umbrella.

The Graves of Hubula/King Atinggola

The graves of Hubula / King Atinggola are found in the village of Dunggala. Atinggola was the king of Palongkodu. Queen Kabatua was his wite. The outside wall of the king's grave looks like rectangular crown, while that of hiis wife is shaped like house with a roof and displays the Chinese influence.

The January 23 Monument Stand in Ipilo

The January 23 Monument Stands in Ipilo, in the center of Gorontalo town. It is a monument dedicated to the struggle of the people of Gorontalo against Dutch colonialism. The Indonesian national flag flew for the first time on January 23, 1942, in this area.

The Cave of Jin

The Cave of Jin is 85 kilometers from Gorontalo. It is esaier to reach it by boat than overland. The scenery is beautiful.

Gorontalo Embroidery

Tapa

Gorontalo Embroidery is famous. Many kinds of embroidered cloths can be found in the village of Tapa and Gorontalo. Gorontalo embroidery is known as krawang.

The Potongan Hot-Water Pool

The potongan hot-water pool, located 45 kiklometers from Gorontalo, can be reached by various kinds of transportation means, including horse-carts. The pool is flanked by two hills. The views are very beautiful.


 

 

The Waterfall of Sumber Waras

Snake Cave

The waterfall of Sumber Waras is located near the village of Bau. That far from the village is a scenic waterfall only 1.5 kilometers from a cave known as Snake Cave. The water of waterfall cascades over three terraces.

Lake Limboto

Lake Limboto is surrounded by beautiful scenery. The lake itself is six to eight meters deep and covers a surface area of 5,600 hectarers. Sailing and fishing are allowed. Located only a few kilometers outside Gorontalo, towards the northwest.

Pantai Indah and Dumbo Ria

Pantai Indah and Dumbo Ria beaches are located near port of Gorontalo, about four kilometers from the center of town. This is a white sandy beach, almost without waves. Really ideal for sailing and swimming.

Taluda Waterfall

Taluda

Taluda Waterfall has beautiful scenery. The pool beneath it is 20 meters deep. Located in Taluda village, reachable from Gorontalo or Limboto, approximately 45 kilometers away.

Yosonegoro Arena

Limboto

Yosonegoro Arena is in the village of Limboto. There is a mini-golf field, and motor racing circuit. The place is much visited during holidays.

Lumbongo Spring

Lumbongo Spring is located in Suwawa village, about 30 kilometers from Limboto, reachable by motorboat. The pool is one to two meters deep.

Saronde is a very beautiful island with white sandy beaches. The water is suitable for swimming, sailing, snorkling and water skiing. It can be reached from the small town of Kwandang (65 kilometers from Gorontalo) or Dambalo (68 kkilometers from Gorontalo) or Molontadu (73 kilometers from Gorontalo). TO the north of this island are Payu Island, which is smaller, and Utanggole, a bigger island.

Nature Reserve

Tangale Nature Reserve

The Tangale Nature Reserve located 35 kilometers from Gorontalo. It is inhabited by various kinds rare birds. The reserve is 125 hectares large.

Palau Mas, Popaya and Nature Reserve

The Pulau Mas, Popaya and Raja Nature Reserve consist of the three islands located not far to the west of Tanjung Samin, in the distrtict of Kwandang. Living in this area are green turtles, belimbing turtles and the rare finturtles. Kwandang is 90 kilometers from Gorontalo, and can bve reached in one hour. From Kwandang to Raja island, the trip takes two and a half hours by motorboat.

Panua Nature Reserve

Panua Nature Reserve is 160 kilometers from Gorontalo, via Trans-Sulawesi Highway. Still found here are cempaka, banyan, and latula trees, and rare bird species like the maleo. This nature reserve lies in an area 45,000 hectares large and is the main breeding place for maleo birds.

Wawontulap Arakan Sea Nature Reserve

The Wawontulap Arakan Sea Nature Reserve can be reached by sea from Manado's seaport or from Tanawangko harbor in three hours. The sea here is clean and grown with beautiful rare sea grasses. Decorative fishes in various colors inhabit the waters.

Manembo-nembo Wildlife Reserve

The Manembo-nembo Wildlife Reserve is located in the distrtict of Tumpaan and Tombariri, Regency of Minahasa. It is 6,560 hectares large and can be reached from Manado through Tanawangko-Popontolen-Paslaten, for distance of 55 kilometers. Living here are anoas, monkeys endemic to Sulawesi green snakes and kuskus.

Batuputih Recreation Park

The Batuputih Recreation Park is located in an area 625 hectares large, 60 kilometers from Manado, near Bitung. Various species of sea vegetation are found in this park. Also rare animals, such as tarsier, kuskus, black monkeys, bird king prawns, and bees.

Batuangus Recreation Park

The Batuangus Recreation Park has a feature formed by an erruption of the vulcano in 1839. The park covers an area of 635 hectares, 450 meters above sea level. One can take a motorboat in Bitung and arrive at the mooring at Batuangus within 45 minutes. One walks down pathway from Batuputih, which is a distance of 18 kilometers.

Karakelang Island Hunting Park

The Karakelang Island Hunting Park is a recreation forest for hunting by wild animals such as wild buffaloes and wild pigs. The northern and southern forest areas are respectively 16,000 and 5,200 hectares large. It takes a two or three days trip by sea to reach Manado or two hours by air.

Dumoga-Bone National Park

The Dumoga-Bone National Park is located in the distrtict of Bolaang Mongondow, Regency of Gorontalo. It can be reached over land by driving along the coast via Manado-Kapitu-Inobonto-Kotamobagu-Dumoga-Doloduo, a distance of 200 kilometers. Another land route leads over Manado-Kapitu-Motoling-Tompasobaru-Amabang Mountain- Doloduo, for a distance of 250 kilometers, in 5 hours. Living in this park are anoas, deer pigs, maleo and kuntul birds. The ecosystem of this area is well-managed. The park is an important site for field research.
